The Chobe River along Namibia’s north-eastern frontier is a special place. Flowing along the border between Namibia and Botswana, this broad, permanent river sustains one of the most productive ecosystems in the region. Our time here is based on the quieter Namibian side of the river, where the pace is slower, the number of visitors far lower, and the experience more intimate.

The Chobe River and its surrounding floodplains form a rich mosaic of channels, reedbeds and seasonally inundated grasslands. These habitats support an extraordinary diversity of birdlife, making the region one of southern Africa’s finest destinations for bird photography. From the water, photographers regularly encounter kingfishers, bee-eaters, jacanas, herons, storks and egrets, while fish eagles and other raptors patrol the riverbanks. During the warmer months, breeding activity intensifies and migrants arrive, bringing colour, behaviour and constant photographic opportunity.

Staying on the Namibian side of the river provides a distinct advantage. While the Botswana bank near Kasane can attract significant boat traffic, our location allows access to quieter stretches of the river as well as a network of smaller side channels and backwaters that see very little activity. These calmer waterways offer a far more relaxed photographic environment, allowing the boat to be positioned carefully for light, background and approach. Encounters often unfold without the pressure of other boats, creating opportunities for more deliberate and rewarding photography.

Many of the local guides and boatmen have spent their lives on this river and possess an exceptional understanding of its rhythms. Their knowledge of seasonal water levels, bird movements and nesting sites allows them to anticipate activity and position guests in the right place at the right time. With flexible schedules and small groups, time on the water is unhurried and focused on maximising photographic opportunities.

Accommodation on the Namibian bank reflects the character of the region – comfortable yet understated, and carefully integrated into the riverside landscape. Positioned beneath large riverine trees and overlooking the water, the lodge offer a sense of calm and space that contrasts with the busier areas across the river. Days revolve around time on the water and the ever-changing activity along the floodplain, while evenings settle into the quiet rhythm of the river – a safari experience defined by wildlife, light and the unique atmosphere of one of Africa’s great waterways.
