About Lower Zambezi

There are certain areas in Africa that never receive the recognition they deserve. Lower Zambezi National Park is one of those rare places – still a hidden gem tucked into a quiet corner of Zambia and home to some of Africa’s most rewarding wildlife and bird viewing. Vast and beautifully untouched, it offers an extraordinary sense of space and solitude. Low tourist numbers mean you’ll rarely encounter other vehicles, allowing for unhurried sightings and truly intimate wildlife encounters – something increasingly rare in Africa today.

One of the most striking things about the Lower Zambezi is the diversity of landscapes you experience in a single safari. Towering winterthorn and acacia woodlands, wide-open floodplains, dense riverine forests, and sandy islands create a constantly changing backdrop to your safari adventures. These varied ecosystems support an abundance of wildlife, from elephants and big cats to an exceptional array of birdlife, ensuring every day feels different and every sighting feels cinematic.

Walking safaris, canoeing, 4×4 game drives and boating are all on offer – each revealing a different perspective of the wilderness. Canoeing is particularly special here. Unlike the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi river, the Zambian bank is dotted with beautiful side channels and lagoons that draw wildlife in droves, making for unforgettable sightings at water level and moments of complete tranquillity.

Another defining feature of a Lower Zambezi safari is the calibre of guiding. Zambia is renowned for having some of Africa’s most skilled and rigorously trained guides, and the camps we partner with are among the very best. Their deep bush knowledge, ability to read animal behaviour, and passion for storytelling not only elevate your photographic opportunities but ensure you feel safe, informed and deeply connected to the environment around you. If you are seeking a truly authentic African safari – one that feels wild, immersive and genuinely meaningful – the Lower Zambezi delivers.

We’ll be staying at two beautifully positioned camps, with the mighty Zambezi river right on your doorstep. The idea of being surrounded by wildlife may feel both thrilling and daunting, but you will be exceptionally well cared for by myself and the attentive camp teams throughout your stay. Expect comfort, warmth, laughter and moments that will stay with you long after you leave.

About busanga plains

Set deep within the vast wilderness of Kafue National Park, the Busanga Plains offer a completely different photographic experience – one defined by open spaces, golden light, and raw predator-prey interaction. This is Zambia at its most expansive: a seasonal floodplain that transforms into a golden, wildlife-rich arena during the dry season, where visibility stretches for kilometres and every movement feels magnified.

The open plains, dotted with termite mounds and palm islands, create beautifully uncluttered backgrounds — ideal for capturing behaviour, movement, and dramatic wildlife interactions. Large herds of red lechwe, buffalo and zebra dominate the landscape, attracting an impressive concentration of predators. Lion sightings here are often exceptional, with prides regularly active on the plains, while cheetah – far less common in many parts of Zambia – are a real highlight of this region. The scale of the environment allows for dynamic scenes.

Timing plays a key role in what makes Busanga so special. Visiting in mid-July places us right at the beginning of the prime dry season window, when water is still present on the plains and early morning conditions can produce beautiful ground mist. These soft, atmospheric layers add depth and mood to images, particularly at sunrise when the light filters through the haze and wildlife emerges as silhouettes. As the season progresses, the plains dry out further and game densities increase — but this earlier period often offers some of the most evocative photographic conditions.

Game drives here take full advantage of the open terrain to anticipate animal movement and position for the best light. With fewer vehicles than many other well-known safari destinations, sightings feel intimate and unpressured, giving you the time and space to work a scene properly. Whether you’re tracking lions across the floodplain, waiting on a cheetah to hunt, or composing a minimalist frame of lechwe in the mist, Busanga rewards patience and a thoughtful photographic approach. That’s what DC Wild is all about.

Zambia’s reputation for highly trained, intuitive guides is well deserved, and in Busanga this expertise is invaluable — particularly when it comes to reading predator behaviour and positioning vehicles for both sightings and light. Combined with the remote setting and the starkness of the plains, it creates a memorable photographic experience.

Busanga is about drama and atmosphere. Together with the Lower Zambezi, it provides a beautifully balanced photographic journey: one intimate and riverine, the other vast and cinematic.

Our aim on this safari is for you to get many beautiful photographs and to improve your skills as photographer. Photographers of all skill levels are welcome – Danielle will meet you where you are at and be there to answer any questions you may have. We will prioritise light, as this is the essence of photography. This means crisp, early mornings (returning to the lodge once the light is harsh) and making use of warm late afternoon light, returning to the lodge when it is dark. During the heat of the day, you are free to relax, download photos, charge batteries etc. Danielle will be there to assist you with editing your photographs.

All photographers will have a “window seat” in the open game drive vehicle. Please note: We will not be influencing wildlife behaviour (calling, baiting etc) in order to get great photographs, we will merely observe their behaviour and together with our experienced local field guide, get you into the best situation and position for the best photo opportunities.
