About Mashatu

Mashatu is the epitome of what defines a wilderness area in Africa. This 90,000-acre wilderness is a wildlife photographer’s dream destination. Situated on the eastern tip of Botswana, bordering South Africa and Zimbabwe, it is a private game reserve not open to the general public and upholds strong conservation values, meaning you will never find yourself in a crowd of vehicles putting unnecessary pressure on the wildlife.

It is characterised by woodland savanna, wide open plains, rocky sandstone outcrops and lush seasonal marshes. This diversity of habitats supports not only a wide variety of predator and plains game species, but also the largest elephant population on private property in Botswana. Some 1,000 elephants call Mashatu home. It also provides some of the best leopard viewing in Africa, often found reclining in an ancient Mashatu tree – their favourite vantage point!

Lion, cheetah and hyena are also found on the reserve, along with a wealth of general game including eland, wildebeest, zebra, impala and bushbuck. Bird photographers will not be disappointed either, with over 360 species recorded. The overall photographic hit rate is one of the highest anywhere in Africa; predators, elephants, birdlife and dramatic landscapes combine to keep your camera very busy.

Mashatu is also renowned for its exceptional photographic hides and unique vantage points, allowing you to capture wildlife at eye level in incredibly intimate moments. The reserve has a wonderfully relaxed yet refined atmosphere, with trusted guides, warm hospitality and a real sense of space and freedom. Whether you are passionate about photography, wildlife, or simply being immersed in one of Africa’s most striking wilderness areas, Mashatu delivers an unforgettable, deeply satisfying safari experience.

There is a sunken photographic hide on the reserve, giving the wildlife the opportunity to seek you out. This hide has produced several award winning images and was built by photographers, for photographers.

It is perfectly positioned to utilise the light, and because of the low perspective, the backgrounds are incredible. When the elephants aren’t around, many species of mammals and birds use the waterhole so there is usually something exciting to photograph and practice on. An exciting recent addition is the state of the art overnight hide where photographers get to spend then night comfortably & safely while waiting for the nocturnal species to arrive for a drink at the waterhole.
Whether searching for wildlife in an open vehicle or waiting for action inside the hides, the wildlife experience in this ancient landscape will leave you astounded and inspired to return to Africa as soon as you can for some more amazing wildlife photography.
