Some safari destinations are defined not by abundance, but by atmosphere – by scale, silence and the feeling of true remoteness. The Kaokoveld region of north-western Namibia is one such place. Vast, arid and strikingly beautiful, this is one of Africa’s last great wildernesses. Our journeys focus specifically on two camps in two different areas, where dramatic desert landscapes meet surprising concentrations of uniquely adapted wildlife.

The Hoanib River system cuts a life-giving line through the desert, flowing from the interior towards the Atlantic and eventually reaching the stark shores of the Skeleton Coast. Around our camp, towering mountains, shifting dunes and wide gravel plains create a landscape of extraordinary photographic scale. Despite the arid environment, the ephemeral river supports desert-adapted elephant, giraffe and lion, along with oryx and springbok that move across the open terrain. Wildlife sightings here feel raw and uncontrived – animals are completely wild, shaped by the harshness of their environment, and encounters unfold naturally against vast, uncluttered backdrops. It’s a unpretentious as it gets.

Further inland, the other camp offers one of Africa’s most meaningful conservation experiences. This concession forms part of a dedicated effort to protect the critically endangered desert-adapted black rhino. Tracking rhino on foot with expert local guides and trackers is a highlight – not only for the rarity of the species, but for the privilege of engaging with the landscape at ground level. The experience is immersive and deliberate, requiring patience and respect, and it provides an authentic understanding of conservation in action.

Many of the trackers and guides have grown up in the area and possess an intimate knowledge of the land, weather patterns and animal movements. Their ability to read tracks across hard desert substrate and interpret subtle behavioural signs is remarkable. With low vehicle densities and vast private concessions, activities are flexible and unhurried, allowing time to position for light, appreciate the terrain and fully absorb each sighting.

Accommodation in both areas is designed to complement rather than compete with the wilderness. The camps maintain a light ecological footprint and are positioned in such a way for guests to truly experience being out in the wilderness. The emphasis is firmly on space, solitude and connection to the environment. Nights are defined by clear desert skies and profound silence, and days unfold in landscapes that feel both ancient and untouched – a safari experience that is less about density and more about depth.
